“Margaritas and novels are for vacations. Water and nonfiction are everyday essentials.”          —Barbara Dee

Nonfiction books are SO popular, selling on Amazon in print, audio, and Kindle e-book versions. Most of the first-time authors who take my Nonfiction Master Class and/or ask me to help them get published are intent on writing a memoir—a strong category in nonfiction, but not the only route to having your own great nonfiction book.

The top-selling nonfiction categories on Amazon include memoirs & biographies, self-help, cooking, and health and fitness. Other popular nonfiction categories include: religion and spirituality, business and money, parenting and relationships, crafts, hobbies, and home.

When choosing your next nonfiction book to read, consider the different categories. If you’ve only been reading self-help, try biographies. Or branch out from reading memoirs to learning how to quickly adopt healthy habits or how to make money owning an Airbnb property. Feed your mind a good variety of content. If you seem strangely attracted to a book that’s nothing like you’ve tried before, go for it!

Five nonfiction books await me in my Amazon cart (since my reading stack at home is full at the moment). Like “Coming Attractions,” this gives me something to look forward to. Up next: Wild Ideas: How Nature Inspires Groundbreaking Innovations, by Yael Helfman-Cohen.

What type of nonfiction book would you like to read? To write? Come on, I bet you have at least one big idea for a book. Be inspired by Clark Dean, a first-time author who had a breakthrough theory he felt compelled to share with anyone and everyone. Now that his book is released, he has “a sense of relief, a surge of excitement, and renewed creative energy.”  I would never have imagined how fascinating I would find Five Friends Discuss Global Warming by my client, Clark Dean. I’m really glad he decided to share his “big idea.”

Think of a book you’ve read that you know influenced you in a lasting way. I absolutely love hearing from my author clients when someone tells them, “your book gave me the courage I needed to make a big change,” or, “…I finally have the tools that were missing for me,” or, even, “Thank you. Your book saved my life.”

Your passion, your message, or your mission needs to be shared with all of those people who are already hungry for what you have to say. Use your voice, write your book, and make a lasting impact.
