Why write a book?

Several of my author clients participated in an informal focus group where we looked at their experiences after writing and publishing their own books. The stories were fascinating. Here are highlights of several key benefits of writing a nonfiction book.

Establish credibility: Being “the one who wrote the book” carries more clout than almost anything. Picture two M.D.s with the same specialty and years of experience; the one who is the author on your topic of interest is elevated in esteem. With a well-written book, you gain instant credibility as a thought leader.

Increase visibility: If you seek speaking opportunities, you’ll have a huge advantage as an author. Books open doors to media appearances, podcast invitations, and speaking opportunities, including a TED talk. With your book, you’ll have a huge wingspan.

Brand-building and marketing asset: There are countless ways to leverage your book to attract clients, collaborations, travel opportunities, and brand-positive publicity. Your book becomes a valuable tool for connecting with a large number of people in your target audience so they can get to know, like, and trust you.

Differentiate yourself: Your book sets you apart and showcases your unique story and value to others. It will give clarity and confidence to the exact right people you’d love to reach.

Legacy building: Long after publication, your message can reach out and touch others. There is no better way to leave a lasting impact. Your book gives your important message a voice that will make a difference today and in the long-term future.

Let’s make this a powerful exercise for you.

Take out a piece of paper or device for notes and write about each of the benefits.

Instant credibility: What would you gain if you were suddenly known as an expert and thought leader, your name associated widely with your book topic?

Visibility: What would change in your life if your message reached thousands of people…maybe millions? What would change in the world?

Marketing: How could you leverage the fact that you were a published author, “the one who wrote the book” on your topic, in order to attract clients or other income opportunities?

Stand out: Would your book help you to get more and higher-paying speaking engagements? Would you become the “go-to” person for the media when they want to interview someone on your topic?

Legacy: Sharing your stories, insights, and lessons becomes a priceless and timeless gift to others. You lived to tell it. Who do you want to impart your wisdom and ideas to?

Let’s talk about your book. There’s never been a better time to share your voice with the world.
